Recital critiques are required for credit if a student attends a piano recital outside of school, as explained in the class syllabi. In addition, students attending one of the AMPA recitals may choose to write a critique in order to receive extra credit. Following are the guidelines.
RECITAL CRITIQUES
State the event you attended, complete with performer's name, venue, date, etc. Choose three piano pieces from the entire performance, and write at least one single-spaced or two double-spaced typed pages. Use proper grammar, complete sentences and paragraph structure. Discuss the following points in detail:
Part I
Did the performer play with:
1. Confidence?
2. Accuracy?
3. Appropriate tempo?
4. Good dynamics?
5. Clean and appropriate use of pedal?
6. Expression and artistry?
7. Well-defined melody?
Part II
What were the strengths and weaknesses of the performance?
Make suggestions for improvement.
Part III Essay questions
What was the quality of the performance?
Did you enjoy the performance? Why or why not?
Were you familiar with the pieces you heard?
Do you know anything about the composer or musical selection, including time period in music history, style, origin, etc?
