Piano Contract

I will only sit at and play the piano assigned to me by Ms. L. I will not have any drinks or food at the piano (I may eat and drink at the side table). I will treat the piano with extreme care.  This means playing it only the way Ms. L instructs me to, with my fingertips only and no other body parts, with no pounding, no sliding across the keys, no poking at keys, no moving keys sideways, no placing objects on the keyboard or in between the keys. I will not lean on the keyboard with my forearms, head, or any other body part.  While not practicing, the piano lid will be kept closed in order to protect the keyboard. I will keep my fingernails trimmed short--not exceeding each fingertip—so that I may play the piano with correct technique. When writing and erasing, I will keep the piano lid closed. When writing, I will place my paper on top of a book or binder as to prevent accidentally scratching the piano lid. I will not use lotion in this class, due to the greasy residue it leaves on the piano. I will sit at an appropriate distance from the piano, as indicated on page 6 of our piano book, understanding that if I sit super-close to the keyboard my technique will suffer and I might accidentally cause damage to the piano. I will listen and participate during guided instruction. During individual practice time provided in class, I will work at my own pace. I understand that being in piano class and having an instrument assigned to me is a priviledge, and I commit to being mindful and responsible while in piano class.
